Wow, just… Wow. While being a tad cheesy, this book covered romance, a roller coaster of twists, action and a little domestic drama. Ignite Me packed a punch and was a brilliant end to the trilogy.
Determined to kill Anderson and bring down the Reestablishment, Juliette decides it is time to learn how to fight back and the mysterious, illusive Warner is the only person able to teach her. Regrouping with a number of the rebels, Juliette must unite the survivors and the cold-hearted murderer they believed Warner to be and learn to control her potentially fatal abilities. Their only hope is to work together, combine their powers and face the Reestablishment head on. But this proves much harder than it ought to have been and Juliette struggles to help her friends understand that Warner is not the treacherous monster they think he is.
The plot wasn’t fantastic with very few interesting events and even fewer events that made complete sense. Much like the rest of the series, the world wasn’t well developed, much of the dialogue was pointless and cheesy and the writing seemed clunky at times. Yet, I couldn’t put this novel down. Mafi’s attention to the characters and their development was enough to keep me rapt throughout the entirety of the book. The characters and their relationships came before the main plot and I found that it made for a fascinating read.
Juliette, our main lady, finally has point, a use! At last she has matured, ceased her complaints, stopped bemoaning her tragic childhood and stepped up as a leader. With a little help from Kenji, Juliette learns just what they are fighting for and puts aside her personal issues to get the job done. I couldn’t be prouder of that girl! She’s fighting, not only against the corrupt government, but against the increasingly annoying Adam who seems to have abandoned his priorities and much of his sanity. Seeing Juliette make a stand against Adam is such a relief.
As for Warner, no one can help but adore this precious, misunderstood guy. I love that he doesn’t give a damn what people think of him so long as he knows that he is taking the good path. He doesn’t need praise or glory and would rather be hated for doing the right thing than loved for doing wrong. Over the course of this series we learn more and more about him and he just continues to grow more and more perfect as the books go on. Ignite Me is no exception. Every new thing we learn about Aaron Warner Anderson just adds to his many charms and sweeps me off my feet all over again.
Kenji, the world’s best and most adorable sidekick! He is the perfect character, the mysterious leader with a killer sense of humour and the ability to get everyone to pull their heads out of their asses. I'd kill for a spinoff series or a novella focusing on Kenji because we all know I’d read the hell out of that shit! Kenji’s friendship with Juliette honestly gave me life. He trusted her with everything and would follow her anywhere, they pulled each other out from dark places and kept each other moving. Their relationship was so beautiful and amazing to watch develop.
I, really, only had two issues with this story.
The first was the love triangle. I had hoped that it would have ended at least by the start of the book, but it continued... While it may have not been as bad as the last few books, it lingered and, at times, took over the story a little, distracting from the bigger problems looming. Adam became really annoying to deal with and it just got to be too much.
My second issue was the male-female ratio. Juliette spent much of the book surrounded by just guys while the only other female characters, I felt, were sidelined a little as background characters, used only to further the plot without any real essence. Juliette had no strong female allies and the number of women on both sides was far too insignificant. Some more kickass women would have been fantastic (especially for a book meant to empower girls).
Aside from this, Ignite Me was the perfect ending to the series and I loved every second I spent reading it. All I could possibly ask for now is MORE and I am itching to get my hands on the other books. I would recommend this series to anyone just for this book, it blew my mind.
